Last week, an 85-year-old man living in Châtillon-sur-Thouet, a commune in Western France, accidentally went on the road trip of his life while trying to reach his doctor’s office in Airvault, a neighboring commune located about 12 miles from his home. The elderly man never arrived for his doctor’s appointment, but it was only when he missed the meeting of an association of which he was a member that his family began to worry.
As time passed, the man’s family began to worry, and even his neighbors noticed his absence. Soon, the police were contacted about his disappearance, and they, in turn, asked the military for help to geolocate the man’s mobile phone. The octogenarian’s family feared that something bad had happened to him, but they never expected the answer they got from the authorities.
The military tracked down the missing man’s phone to a hotel in Croatia, 1,500 km (932 miles) away from his home. He had apparently driven for 20 hours, passing through Italy to reach the Southern European country. When asked why he had ended up there, the 85-year-old man said that he “didn’t understand what had happened,” adding that his road trip had been the result of a GPS problem.
According to Ici Poitou, although clearly not in the prime of his life, the octogenarian was not known to suffer from cognitive impairment or disorientation issues. His family has already traveled to Croatia to retrieve him, and he’ll probably have quite the story to share with them.
