People underestimate just how much most men hate being dragged around shopping malls by their wives or girlfriends. Some of us would do almost anything to avoid it, as evidenced by a rather amusing piece of news from Mother Russia. Last month, police in Krasnoyarsk reported the bizarre case of a local man who allegedly damaged his own car to fake a carjacking just so did’t have to go shopping with his wife.
The incident reportedly took place in April, but the regional police only disclosed it to the press in October. A woman called the emergency number to report that her husband’s Toyota Corolla had been stolen from the parking lot near their home. She later called back to report that they had found the car on Otdykha Island, in Krasnoyarsk.

When police arrived to inspect the stolen vehicle, they found signs of forced entry and a damaged ignition switch, but after interrogating the husband, officers began to suspect that he wasn’t telling the truth. The more they pressed, the less his story made sense, and after analyzing all the evidence, the police concluded that the man had staged the carjacking as an excuse to get out of a shopping trip with his wife.
Despite having no criminal record, the man now risks spending time behind bars for his stunt. A criminal case has been opened against him under Article 306 (“Knowingly False Denunciation”) of the Russian Criminal Code, and he faces up to two years in prison while under a travel ban.
